    Cheerful Shambhala Day!

Shambhala Day marks the beginning of the New Year, based on the traditional Tibetan Lunar calendar. This is one of the most important days of the Shambhala tradition. This year, it falls on Friday, February 12th, as we begin the Year of the Iron Ox. Shambhala Day is an important time to gather and feel what brings us together and keeps us together as a community. Everyone in the extended community, friends and family are welcome.

    About our Local Celebration

This year we celebrate Shambhala Day online. Our local celebration will begin with group practice, a message from the Transitional Leadership Team about this past year and what’s to come in 2021, and a virtual brunch (see schedule below)

About the Shambhala International live Broadcast

We encourage you also to join Shambhala Online for the Global Shambhala Day address. As always, we will be joining together in worldwide group practice, with greetings from throughout our worldwide community. There will be new components to this year’s broadcast as well as some more traditional elements. We will be sending you a link so that you can access  the broadcast from your home.  You will therefore not need to register individually. The live broadcast from Shambhala Global Services will begin at 1:00 PM EST. The theme of the live broadcast is Celebrating Shambhala Culture and will have a particular focus on Shambhala contemplative arts and culture. Presenters will include Acharya Arawana Hayashi, Acharya Dan Hessey, and arts and culture features from Centers and Groups around the world. Programming elements will include a lhasang, Kyudo shot, Ikebana demonstration, tea ceremony demonstration, calligraphy exhibition, and Miksang presentation. This will truly be a celebration of our rich Shambhala culture.

Shambhala Day is traditionally the one day of the year that we make a fundraising request for Shambhala Global Services (SGS), which supports so much of what we do. You can learn more about what SGS supports here. Please click here to donate to SGS.

    Practice books

We have ordered practice books for the Year of the Ox. If you would like one now, please email [email protected] with your mailing address and we will send one to you. We will also offer them when we celebrate our return to 2030 Sansom Street (date very unknown, but eagerly awaited).

9:00 AM Opening Chants and The Elixir of Life
The Elixir of Life is a short liturgy written by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche for use by Shambhala practitioners to welcome the lunar new year and to celebrate their birthdays. It includes a series of simple yet pithy contemplations which are reminders of one’s precious human birth and of the aspiration to help others.

    10:00 AM Sadhana of Mahamudra

The Sadhana of Mahamudra, written by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, is both a practice and a teaching on overcoming obstacles. This chant contains the essence of Trungpa Rinpoche’s teachings for the West.
The texts for both practices will be screen shared and everyone is welcome to participate.

11:15 AM  Community Welcome and Greetings from the Transitional Leadership Team

11:30 AM  Brunch (BYO whatever you wish)
This is an opportunity to gather together with sangha friends, to share a virtual space together, recognizing the many challenges we have experienced this past year, and appreciating the power of community to support us during the very real isolation so many are experiencing.

1:00 PM Shambhala Global Services International Live Broadcast: Celebrating Shambhala Culture

Again, we will be sending you a separate link for the International Broadcast so that you can access the broadcast from your home. You will therefore not need to register individually.
