In 1979, to bring a form of meditation known as mindfulness into the medical mainstream, Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts. Since then, decades of scientific research at medical centers all over the world shows that training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction often profoundly affects participants' ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress while learning to live life more fully.

Mindfulness is a basic human quality, a way of learning to pay attention to whatever is happening in your life that allows you a greater sense of connection to your life inwardly and outwardly. Mindfulness is also a practice, a systematic method aimed at cultivating clarity, insight, and understanding.

In this class series, following Kabat-Zinn’s curriculum, you will:

  • Learn to take better care of yourself by exploring and understanding the interplay of mind and body, mobilizing your own inner resources for coping, growing, and healing
  • Recognize personal patterns of automatic pilot and habitual stress reactivity that may lead to reduced effectiveness and burnout
  • Identify and analyze current work/life stressors
  • Reflect on and examine individual resources for meeting stress, comparing adaptive and maladaptive coping mechanisms

The series includes eight weekly, two-and-a-half hour classes and a one-day, 6-hour guided day of mindfulness. Sessions consist of guided sitting meditation, mindful movement practices, teachings and discussions. Participants are expected to practice the learned mindfulness skills daily for a minimum of 25 minutes.

Published research indicates that the majority of people who complete the MBSR curriculum report:

  • Lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms
  • Greater energy and enthusiasm for life
  • An increased ability to relax
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away
  • An ability to cope more effectively with both short- and long-term stressful situations

Course leaders Aurora M. Casta and Marilia S. Marien are both mental health professionals with certifications to teach MBSR through the University of California San Diego Center for Mindfulness. They have taught MBSR classes since 2014, and led Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy groups since 2017.
