Philadelphia Shambhala Center’s annual Urban Retreat is an opportunity for us to connect deeply with meditation while continuing to relate with our regular life. The practice of sitting meditation uncovers the stable, clear and potent quality of our mind.  By engaging in this revealing practice while maintaining continuity with our daily lives, we are better able to incorporate the rewards of retreat into our day to day existence. This allows the benefits of retreat practice to stay with us long after the retreat has ended

This year’s Urban Retreat theme is the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. The historical Buddha taught meditation using these four foundations, which have been passed down to Buddhist meditators of all generations and in all schools of Buddhism, for they are the foundations on which all Buddhist meditational traditions have been built.

The retreat will include sitting and walking meditation, mindful movement, private interviews with a meditation instructor, talks by the director and contemplative exercises on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. Most meals will be taken contemplative style. Altogether, there will be about 12 hours of practice each day.

Participation in the full week, all sessions, will satisfy “weekthun” requirements for Shambhala Guide training, Enlightened Society Assembly and other advanced Shambhala programs.

If you cannot attend the whole week, we can work with you on a schedule. Also note the the Philadelphia Center's Generosity Policy is applicable to this program.  Please contact Marc Scheiner ([email protected]) if you wish to discuss schedule or payment options.
