Shakyamuni Buddha Day (Vaishaka Day)
with Shastri Tom Berthoff
Vaishakha Day is a major Buddhist holiday which commemorates three major events in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana. Everyone is invited to join us for meditation, talks, and celebration.
We will practice the "Sadhana of the 16 Sthaviras" together, a traditional recitation practice with Shakyamuni Buddha and the 16 Sthaviras as its focus.
The Sanskrit word "sthavira" means "elder". These 16 elders were chosen by the Buddha to protect and propagate the Buddhadharma. Here's more on the 16 Sthaviras and some background on the practice: http://www.rigpawiki.org/index.php?title=Sixteen_Arhats
