About Us
Philadelphia Shambhala Meditation Center is a non-profit,
volunteer organization dedicated to
creating enlightened society. We work towards this end by providing a place where people may learn
and work with various contemplative practices. The primary practice that we teach is that of sitting
meditation (shamatha/vipashyana). There are three entry points, or gates, to the center:
Since our goal is creating enlightened society, which we define as a society where people are fully
present and manifest their innate wisdom, gentleness and dignity, we offer different ways of working
towards this goal. If you are interested in any of the entry points listed above, you should contact the coordinator of that area.
The Philadelphia Shambhala Meditation Center is part of an international organization of other centers like ourselves. There are also regional practice centers and abbeys associated with Shambhala International. There are centers in most major cities in the US and increasingly, around the globe. Our headquarters is in Halifax, Nova Scotia and our spiritual and administrative head is the Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.
Financial Support
We are supported through the monthly dues of members who contribute because they place high value on the teachings we present and feel that it is important to make this available to other people. The programs we host typically have a fee involved in order to pay the operating expenses of the program. We do not, however, want money to be an obstacle for someone sincerely interested in the teachings we have to offer. Should your finances be limited we will happily work with you. Because we are a volunteer organization and operate on a very thin budget, we ask that if you can afford our programs that you pay the regular fee as we have certain basic operating expenses that we must cover.
